PhD in Petroleum Engineering: Senior/principal researchers - exploration research

Statoil is an international energy company with operations in 36 countries. Building on 40 years of experience from oil and gas production on the Norwegian continental shelf, we are committed to accommodating the world's energy needs in a responsible manner, applying technology and creating innovative business solutions. Statoil is headquartered in Norway with 21,000 employees worldwide, and is listed on the New York and Oslo stock exchanges.

TPD, research, development and innovation (RDI) is responsible for Statoil's global RDI strategy, programs and projects. RDI's future structure will be divided in five permanent business units - exploration, mature area developments and IOR, frontier developments, unconventionals, and innovation.

Through the four core areas covering the main upstream building blocks where Statoil is present and growing, we carry out testing and qualification of technology to meet the business needs. In addition, innovation is established as a separate unit and will play a significant role by supporting BA specific innovation roadmaps and by driving Statoil's corporate innovation initiative. RDI also operates and further develops laboratories and large scale test facilities, including the technology centre at Mongstad.

Our ambition is to be the world leading in RDI. A world class RDI organization is crucial for supporting Statoil's growth ambition; a daily production of 2.5 million boe in 2020. We aim to be the most successful RDI company in 2020 - recognized for creating new business. Even though Statoil was voted the 7th most innovative company in the world in 2011 (Fortune Magazine), we constantly need to improve in order to succeed. To be a world leading RDI organisation we have identified the following focus areas: innovation, quality and precision, leadership and strategic view.

The advertised positions are related to RDI exploration research.
Tasks
  • GLOBAL BASIN ANALYSIS focuses on developing knowledge, methods and tools for frontier exploration growth. Positions are available to work within an integrated, multi-disciplinary team. Candidates with expertise in petroleum systems analysis, tectonics/geodynamics, regional geology, climate modelling and paleotopography & paleogeography prediction are encouraged to apply
  • SILICICLASTIC PLAYS AND RESERVOIRS prediction has as its main research focus to develop predictive knowledge and concepts for under-explored plays, including i) resevoir/trap fairway prediction from tectono-stratigraphic restoration and 'source-to-sink' analysis; ii) subtle trap prediction from seismic-stratigraphic/-geomorphic visualization and interpretation; iii) complex sandstone reservoir quality prediction from integrated sedimentology/petrology/ diagenesis analysis. Candidates with background in structural geology, salt-tectonics, seismic stratigraphy/geomorphology, sedimentology, stratigraphy and petrology are encouraged to apply
  • CARBONATE PLAYS AND RESERVOIRS focuses on characterization and flow prediction of carbonate plays and reservoirs. Main focus areas are geological understanding of margin and lacustrine carbonates, seismic characterization, petrophysical rock typing and well delivery prediction. Candidates with competence in structural geology, seismic stratigraphy/geomorphology, petrophysics and reservoir engineering in carbonate rocks are encouraged to apply
  • SEISMIC IMAGING have several positions available for research. Main focus areas are advanced wave-equation techniques for velocity estimation and imaging and integrated approaches to improve velocity model building. We are also addressing the specific needs for our onshore activities with the aim to improve acquisition, processing and imaging for shale plays
  • The FRONTIER EXPLORATION GEOPHYSICS department focuses on integrated geophysical work, which includes themes as rock physics, electromagnetics (EM), gravimtery, magnetometry as well as seismic data. Within the department there will be positions available for candidates with expertise within geophysics - particularly gravimetry and magnetometry, rock physics and EM, seismic acquisition but also other geophysical skills will be of interest
  • UNCONVENTIONAL HYDROCARBONS performs research into unconventional hydrocarbons, primarily shale plays and gas hydrates. Candidates from all geological, geophysical and petrophysical disciplines are encouraged to apply (particularly geochemistry, petrophysics, shale petrology, sedimentology/ sequence stratigraphy, geophysics, seismic interpretation)
Qualifications
  • Master's degree/ PhD level
  • Preferable with industry experience
  • Make sure that we are able to give your application consideration: Please attach copies of your diplomas, certificates and grades in English or Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language). Applications submitted without such attachments will unfortunately not be evaluated. If you are in the process of completing a degree, please upload an official temporary transcript or other document describing subjects and grades completed to this point
