Job description
The Professor of Natural Resource Engineering will play a leading role in establishing the group’s future research programme and will be instrumental in teaching and coordinating the Resource Engineering curriculum.The successful candidate has a PhD in a relevant area and an excellent publication record.Potential research areas are 1) optimizing the link between mining and processing of material to reduce processing and energy costs; mining and processing of oil sands; 2) the use of coal deposits in the Netherlands for mining of coal and storage of CO2; 3) solution mining of salt; 4) offshore winning of ores.The Professor should work closely with industry and obtain significant research funding from these sources. Publication of research results in leading international journals is of paramount importance and should reach a high and steady output within a few years.The Professor will teach Resource Engineering courses at the BSc and MSc levels. Excellent teaching skills are important, and personal interaction with students and young researchers should be professional, enthusiastic and encouraging. The Professor should have good managerial capacities to contribute to the organizational aspects of the Department.It is expected that non-Dutch-speaking candidates will learn Dutch in a limited period of time. The new Professor should speak, read and write English proficiently.

Requirements
Required education/skills:Doctorate
The successful candidate should possess a PhD in one of the areas of Resource Engineering and should have performed successful research in this field, published in peer-reviewed, international scientific journals. A clear and creative vision on the development of the field is of paramount importance, as is the ambition to achieve international academic acclaim. Furthermore, the candidate should demonstrate the ability to initiate, acquire, execute and coordinate research projects. Inspiring lecturing skills are considered crucial for raising student interest and getting the MSc programme running successfully.Team-building qualities and communication skills are important, as close cooperation with other members of the scientific staff of the University is essential.The candidate should have good contacts with the industry and possess a strong international network that allows her or him to acquire external funding. Moreover, the candidate should be active in professional societies and have the ability to develop a prominent role based on expertise, personality and reputation, both in the Netherlands and internationally.The new professor should be fluent in spoken and written English. The successful candidate will be able to read and speak Dutch within a limited period of time.

The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences comprises five departments. One of them, the Department of Geotechnology, is responsible for the teaching of a broad-based Dutch-language BSc programme in Applied Earth Sciences and a number of specialized, internationally-oriented English-language MSc courses. The judicious exploration, exploitation and use of the Earth’s resources and subsurface space are central themes in the research. Research focuses on the deep underground as well as on the shallow subsurface. The department is subdivided into four sections: Geo-Engineering, Applied Geophysics and Petrophysics, Applied Geology and Petroleum Engineering. The chair of Natural Resource Engineering will in all likelihood be embedded in the Petroleum Engineering section. Resource Engineering offers an MSc specialization in all aspects of Natural Resource Engineering. It attracts students from various backgrounds: home-trained BSc students in Applied Earth Sciences, students from other Dutch universities and polytechnical institutes, exchange students from European and non-European universities and full-time students from around the world. Within Resource Engineering, the teaching programme covers a broad range of aspects in the fields of mining and processing. Some of these courses are offered by international partners through the European Mineral Programmes, which are coordinated by Delft. The Natural Resource Engineering group contributes to the department’s BSc programme.
