 Multiphase boosting
 Background
Major challenges are related to efficient utilization of existing infrastructure and exploration of new fields worldwide. Increased production of oil and gas, demands new field development based on sub-sea production, including bulk separation and multiphase boosting. The multiphase boosting represents an energy-intensive production segment in which limited research has been invested. Specifically this relates to the thermodynamic and flow fundamentals.
Aker Solutions has developed a high pressure multiphase pump concept, the MultiBooster™. In order to convert this concept into a successful industrialized product, we need to gain more in-depth knowledge of physics and the performance. We are currently doing major investments for new test facilities that will help increase our knowledge.
Multiphase boosting form a key element in future oil and gas production and it is of vital importance to understand and develop a consistent thermodynamic and fluid property basis. The know-how is linked to fundamentals as outlined below:
•           Thermodynamic and fluid property fundamentals for multiphase boosting
•           Performance parameters and fluid correction equations
•           Performance prediction, including real multiphase fluid behavior in MultiBooster™ impeller
The generation of know-how will be based on experimental investigations first using water/air and at the next stage model fluids, and the development of appropriate models for generalization of experimental data as an equipment best practice/design basis. The basic know-how will form common multiphase grounding in equipment design.
Proposed subjects of study:
  • Gas blocking/accumulation in impeller (transient behaviour)
  • Fluid properties influence on impeller performance
  • Inlet condition impact on performance
  • Effect of blade clearance on performance (special: MultiBooster™ impeller)
The first part of the candidate’s research will be a literature study, some compulsory PhD classes and the building of a small scale test loop at NTNU Trondheim.
 Education and Experience:
  • M.Sc, or equivalent education
  • Good understanding of relevant fundamental physical processes
  • Analytical skills within one or more of the following fields: fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and heat transfer
  • Good knowledge of relevant simulation tools
  • Fluent verbal and written English language
Personal Qualities:
 Excellent communication skills (English/Norwegian).
    • Ability to demonstrate initiative and assertiveness.
    • Be structured in his/her daily work.
    • Ability to work in teams as well as independently.
The candidate will be employed at NTNU in Trondheim where he/she will perform the thesis. The candidate should also expect some travel activities to Aker Solutions facilities at Tranby.

Description

Multiphase pumping, boosting and metering technologies are critical in the offshore oil and gas industry. However, multiphase flows are a very complex physical process since they combine the characteristics of a deformable interface, channel shape, flow direction and in some cases the compressibility of one of the phases (gas phase). Depending on the operating conditions, such as pressure, temperature, mass velocity, channel orientation (the effect of gravity, which in non-vertical channels tends to pull the liquid to the bottom of the channel), and fluid properties which are widely different combinations of different classes of fluids such as oil-gas, oil-water and oil-gas-water etc. Various gas-liquid or liquid-liquid interfacial geometric configurations occur in multiphase flow systems. To develop and improve multiphase pumping, boosting and metering technologies, it is very important to understand the flow regime characteristics under various operation conditions. The available experiments and models are mostly for steady flow conditions. Whether the available models are applicable to the transient operation conditions in the subsea oil gas production is not well explored. Therefore, the proposed research aims to model the complex transient flow regimes of water-gas-oil (oil-water, oil-gas and oil-water-gas) flows under the complex subsea conditions and to develop the corresponding prediction models for the void fraction, liquid holdup and frictional pressure drops. Design criteria of oil-gas-water multiphase flows under various flow regimes will be proposed. The proposed study is fundamental to the further investigation of multiphase metering, boosting and pumping technologies which have been planned as our long-term research targets in the field of multiphase flow.

NSRI was launched in January 2009 to define a co-ordinated long-term research strategy for the UK subsea industry. Job description

Geological reservoir models used in hydrocarbon and groundwater exploitation are typically based on stochastic-geometric interpolation methods. Such methods generate solutions that are locally optimal, but are not constrained by the large-scale geological setting of the reservoir. The aims of this project are (1) to develop a post-processor for an existing low-resolution, basin-scale process-based model of fluvio-deltaic drainage networks and stratigraphy, which is conditioned to large-scale basin geometry and geological boundary conditions. The post-processor should generate explicit, object-based, stochastic realizations of the small-scale reservoir architecture (low and high sinuosity channel belts) to permit analysis of sand-body connectivity, and its controls on fluid flow and mixing of sediments with different provenance; (2) to better characterize subsurface heterogeneity and reduce the solution space associated with well data relative to current (geometric) models; (3) to test the method by performing flow simulations on synthetic and real-world reservoirs, in order to study the dispersal of contaminants in the shallow subsurface and propose strategies for groundwater exploitation.

Requirements

Candidates should have an MSc degree in Earth Sciences (Geology, Geophysics, Physical Geography) or Engineering (Engineering Geology, Hydraulic Engineering, Petroleum Engineering). Candidates with demonstrable expertise in geological or flow modelling and a keen interest in optimization problems are specifically encouraged to apply.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be employed by Delft University of Technology for a fixed period of four years within which he/she is expected to write a doctoral thesis. TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customized compensation and benefits package (the 'IKA'). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Delft University of Technology strives to increase the number of women in higher academic positions; women are therefore especially encouraged to apply.

PhD-fellowships / Post Doc-fellowships Norway

We are looking for four candidates for PhD-fellowships / Post Doc-fellowships (3 years) on projects within enhanced oil recovery supported by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and industry. The fellows will work in the following projects:

A Novel Approach to Surfactant Flooding Under Mixed-Wet Conditions

Low salinity water flooding of North Sea sandstone reservoirs

Project description:

A Novel Approach to Surfactant Flooding Under Mixed-Wet Conditions
The objective is to enhance the present knowledge and competence on surfactant flooding by investigating the key oil recovery mechanisms at various reservoir wetting conditions and at different scales in sandstone reservoirs. In particular, the project will be focused on the link between formation properties measured at core-scale and the input parameters used to properly represent these properties in a field-wide simulation and how this dependency is influenced by heterogeneities larger than the core-scale and smaller than the field simulator grid block size. One position will be directed towards experimental work and the other one towards matematical modelling.

Low salinity water flooding of North Sea sandstone reservoirs
The objective is first to develop a numerical modelling routine for simulation of physicochemical processes in low salinity water floods on laboratory scale (1-dimensional). A simple extension to water flood simulators that can be used to translate laboratory results into field scale estimates of low salinity water floods will be presented. Best practice for determination of the potential for low salinity water flooding of sandstone oil reservoirs including guidelines for required experimental and simulation work will be established. One position will be directed towards experimental work and the other one towards matematical modelling.

We would like to start as soon as possible.
Competency requirements
The fellowships are open for applicants with background in Reservoir Technologies, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics. Candidates must hold an MSc. degree, Cand. Scient. or equivalent.

Experience
We especially welcome applicants who have recently graduated, but are also interested to hear from those with some years of relevant work experience.

Three-Year PHD Project in Petroleum Reservoir Modelling

Improved characterization and modelling of thinly-bedded, shallow-marine sandstone reservoirs

The aim of this project is to construct well constrained, detailed 3-D models of thinly-bedded, shallow-marine sandstones directly from suitable analogue outcrops. The reservoir properties and fluid flow dynamics of the models will be analyzed and quantified using a range of mathematical and numerical techniques, and methods for predicting them using conventional subsurface core- and log-derived measurements will be investigated. This innovative, multidisciplinary approach, combining detailed 3-D geological outcrop mapping with quantitative analysis, will be essential to understand how to properly characterise and model these complex reservoirs.

The project is ideal for a numerate geologist, geophysicist, engineer, physicist or mathematician who is interested in multidisciplinary research which combines the important aspects of petroleum geoscience and engineering, and which will advance our understanding of a significant problem. It will provide an ideal route into either an industry or academic career. Training will be provided where necessary in the state-of-the-art, industry-standard geological modelling and flow simulation software which will be used throughout the project.

The project is fully funded by NERC and ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company and offers an enhanced stipend relative to those normally offered by the UK Research Councils. The student will spend time working in the ExxonMobil URC offices in Houston, Texas. There will also be two field seasons in Utah. The anticipated start date for the project is 5th October 2009, but an earlier start is possible.

Job description

Hydrogen storage is a major bottleneck in the development of a future energy economy based on hydrogen as an energy carrier. Key to competitive hydrogen storage is the development of lightweight, cheap and safe materials that can be reversibly loaded under temperature and pressure conditions suitable for applications. Surface adsorption of hydrogen in porous, crystalline materials such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) provide materials with record specific surface areas per gram material, and are therefore proposed as potential hydrogen storage materials.
Our research focuses on the design of new materials using first principles modelling, chemical synthesis and the fundamental characterisation of the hydrogen sorption. Characterisation of the adsorption using macroscopic methods as well as in situ neutron diffraction will be performed to determine which are the most favourable positions of hydrogen in the crystals with the optimum adsorption interaction strength. With this knowledge new materials will be designed, aiming at improved characteristics and higher capacity. For this research we have openings for two highly motivated PhD students who will work on the project in close collaboration; one with a synthetic chemistry background and one with a physics background.
For more information, please visit: http://www.rrr.tudelft.nl/fame.

Requirements

The PhD student in synthetic chemistry must have a strong synthetic chemistry background and additional experience with physical chemistry experimental characterisation methods.
The PhD student in physics or physical chemistry will have a strong physics or physical chemistry background and affinity with first principles modelling and/or experimental techniques operating at the microscopic/atomic scale.??

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will be employed by the TU Delft for a fixed period of 4 years within which he or she is expected to write a dissertation leading to a doctoral degree (PhD thesis). Benefits and other employment conditions are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

Research Associate

Numerical modelling of fluid flow through complex, low permeability hydrocarbon reservoirs

Department of Earth Science and Engineering

A fixed term post for 2 years

Salary in the range £26,580 - £33,790 per annum

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to join a multidisciplinary project investigating the transport properties of complex, low permeability reservoir rocks and their impact on fluid flow and hydrocarbon recovery. You will join an integrated team of reservoir geologists and engineers, taking responsibility for the numerical modelling aspects of the research. The project is being undertaken within the Petroleum Geoscience and Engineering Research Section of the Department of Earth Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, and is funded by Norske Shell Exploration and Production B.V.

The successful applicant will lead the development and application of leading-edge reservoir modelling and flow simulation techniques to characterise and quantify the reservoir properties and fluid flow dynamics of three common types of low permeability hydrocarbon reservoir. Detailed three-dimensional models of each reservoir type will be reconstructed directly from high resolution data provided by the geologists in the team, obtained from Eocene rocks in the Western Desert of Egypt, and Mesozoic reservoirs in NW Borneo. The models will be analysed and characterised using a range of mathematical and numerical techniques, including streamline and conventional multiphase flow simulation, geostatistical methods, and percolation theory.

Applicants should be educated to PhD level (or equivalent) and have a background in engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, numerate earth science or equivalent. Experience in one or more of the following areas would be desirable: reservoir modelling, reservoir engineering, reservoir simulation, computational fluid dynamics and/or numerical modelling of multi-phase flow in porous media. You will join a dynamic, close-knit, interdisciplinary research team working on a challenging project to generate new technology for improved oil and gas recovery. Your research will also contribute to the department's ongoing commitment to deliver advanced modelling capabilities for petroleum reservoir evaluation. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop their research career over a longer timescale within this framework and to liaise closely with our industry sponsors.
